SpaceX Rocket Explodes During Takeoff

A Falcon 9 rocket has failed to deliver its payload to the International Space Station. Elon Musk’s SpaceX project was dealt a big blow on Sunday when the company’s rocket exploded shortly after blastoff at 10:21 a.m. local time.

The rocket, which launched from Cape Canaveral, was carrying a Dargon cargo spacecraft that would have delivered supplies to the International Space Station. The capsule was carrying two and a half tons of supplies, equipment and experiments including a new docking adapter for accommodating future U.S.-built spaceships to a virtual-reality headset for the station’s crew.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station failed to receive goods last month when a Russian spacecraft was destroyed during takeoff. The new supplies rock is slated to launch from Kazakhstan on July 3.

Shortly after the explosion SpaceX released the following tweet:

No further details have been released by SpaceX at this time.

Along with the launch, SpaceX was going to attempt landing the rocket on an ocean-based platform.
