Fast-casual restaurant chain Chipotle has found a new supplier for its previously popular Carnitas product. The company, Karro Food, is located in the United Kingdom.
In January, Chipotle was forced to remove carnitas from one-third of its stores because officials couldn’t find “responsibly raised pork” at any US providers.
With a new carnitas supplier, Chipotle (CMG) locations should be serving carnitas by the end of the year.
The Tex-Mex food provider has been working endlessly to market itself as a GMO-free, animal-friendly, food chain.
“It has always been our preference to get our pork (and other meats) from domestic suppliers, but right now the supply simply isn’t available,” a Chipotle spokesperson told CNNMoney. “Upwards of 95% of pork produced in this country is conventionally raised, so the available supply that meets our high standards is relatively small.”
The company will continue to seek out US pork suppliers who can provide it with responsibly raised pork.
