Do you remember that quote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”? It’s the kind of quote I believe was reserved for gadgets like the DuoVox Mate Pro. Touted as the most advanced color night-vision camera available to regular users, the DuoVox Mate Pro can capture video in darkness virtually as if it were 4 pm in the afternoon. While traditional night-vision cameras use IR LEDs to see in the dark, the DuoVox takes a different route, using an F0.9 aperture lens for light sensitivity, a Sony STARVIS 2 Back-illuminated CMOS Image 1/1.8″ day-night sensor, and AI that applies advanced noise-reduction, color-correction, and object recognition to capture footage in the dark. The result? A camera that can record crisp, bright video even in light conditions as low as 0.0001 Lux (moonless night), without using IR blasters that allow people and cameras to detect you. Perfect for everything from vlogging to night-time wildlife capture and even the odd covert mission… you know, if you’ve got clearance for that kind of thing.

Designed with a form that looks no different from your consumer-grade DSLR or Mirrorless camera, the DuoVox Mate Pro is a nifty handheld device with the ability to capture up to 2K videos or even photos in RAW and JPEG. On the inside sits the Mate Pro’s custom-engineered Sony STARVIS 2 back-illuminated CMOS 1/1.8″ sensor, right behind a 7-glass lens system that allows it to computationally capture multiple images and superimpose them to make a bright, hi-res shot with viewing distances of up to 1000ft or 300 meters.
What stands out about the DuoVox Mate Pro at first glance is its intuitive design and interface. It looks and behaves like you’d expect, and doesn’t come with controls, buttons, and knobs that would make you want to take out the user manual. The camera’s easy to grip with one hand, and can be mounted on a tripod too. It comes with a 3″ touchscreen display on the back that lets you navigate through its settings, and even syncs with your smartphone using an Android or iOS app. The camera also has its own built-in microphone and speaker, and perhaps its greatest yet most understated feature – a powerful built-in LED flashlight (with 3 brightness settings) to let you navigate in the dark.
On the software front, the DuoVox Mate Pro coves a wide range of use-cases. It lets you record traditionally by hitting the shutter button, or even lets you activate a motion-detection trigger, allowing the camera to start recording as soon as it picks up any motion. It even has an instant recording feature that begins as soon as the camera’s powered up, as well as a way-back recording function that saves footage from up to 25 minutes before you hit the shutter, so that you never miss a moment. Similarly, a delay-stop feature continues recording for up to 30 seconds after you hit the shutter, to avoid video loss through accidental button-pressing. A loop-mode setting lets the camera record continuously for 24/48 hours, overwriting the older footage with newer footage, and like any good camera, the Mate Pro also comes with a timelapse setting that lets you take stunning lapses of a bright day transitioning into a well-lit night scene. Footage gets recorded to the DuoVox Mate Pro’s MicroSD card slot which supports storage of as much as 512GB, and a 3000mAh battery gives you 4 continuous hours of recording, with a USB-C slot letting you charge or power the device for longer sessions.
The one standing issue with night-vision tech is that they’re usually specialized gadgets designed to serve a single specific use – a night-vision camera for wildlife photography doesn’t lend itself to being used for home security, and vice versa. The DuoVox Mate Pro doesn’t quite have that problem. Its versatile build lets you use it for outdoor wildlife videography, city-based vlogging, or even as a home security camera (thanks to the motion detection), a car dashcam (with the loop recording mode), or even a regular webcam (thanks to its ability to hook up to a PC and also its facial recognition capabilities). Its rugged build means you can take it anywhere, and its water-resistant construction means your night-vision camera can more than withstand a couple of splashes of water. The DuoVox Mate Pro starts at $599, that’s 50% off its retail price of $1200.
