Chairs are probably the backbone of the furniture group, and they quite literally support our backs as well when we sit. They’re that crucial piece of furniture around which the other furniture pieces are selected and curated. I spend most of my day cocooned away on my work chair and typing away to glory. By the time, I’m done with my day and get around to doing other things, my back can feel mush – if I don’t have the right chair to work on! And most of us spend the majority of our day sitting on chairs, whether we’re working in our home office, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting and reading a book for leisure. Hence, this piece of furniture needs to be not only comfortable but ergonomic and aesthetic as well. It needs to provide good support to our backs and butts, and also somehow harmoniously complement the rest of the furniture in our home, and our interiors. And, a chair design I recently came across and quite liked is the [ 001 ] Chair by Beta Objects.

Designer: Beta Objects and Holland & Sherry

Designed by Beta Objects in collaboration with Holland & Sherry, the [ 001 ] Chair is a cozy and stylish lounge chair that is the perfect culmination of British design and craftsmanship. The design studio playfully mixed together form, functionality, and usability to create a piece of furniture that focuses wholly on both comfort and visual appeal. The chair comprises of two main components – a tubular frame that was constructed by a specialist racing roll-cage manufacturer, a tribute to Beta’s strong affinity of passion for automotive design, and bright orange cushions that were upholstered in Holland & Sherry’s Chamonix fabric.

Webbing straps and black passivated stainless steel fixing offer sprung support to the back cushion, while also contributing to the chair’s visually appealing aesthetics. A mix of foam densities was utilized to create the upholstery, thereby ensuring optimal comfort and support for the user when he/she is seated. The tubular frame, built from mandrill-bent mild steel, was meticulously fabricated and powder coated with a high gloss finish, which provides a stunning contrast to the fabric cushions.

The end result is a rather charming and sophisticated chair with a solid body and a contrasting color scheme that commands attention without being overly loud. It must be noted that the [ 001 ] Chair is quite a sizeable, and space-consuming design, so it wouldn’t be recommended for smaller homes with space constraints, but would be perfect for larger living spaces with plenty of free space to spare.
